Duelle (12)

Duelle (Une quarantaine) is a 1976 experimental fantasy drama directed by the French New Wave film director Jacques Rivette. Its screening at Towner will be accompanied by an introduction by the artist Ayo Akingbade.

The film stars the French actor, director and screenwriter Juliet Berto as the Queen of the Night who battles the Queen of the Sun (Bulle Ogier) over a magical diamond that will allow the winner to remain on earth.

The film will be in French with English subtitles.

The screening accompanies the Towner exhibition Ayo Akingbade: Duette.

Akingbade selected the film as it inspired the presentation of the two artworks being exhibited – 55 Days and Red Soleil. The artist describes: ‘In many ways the two films played together act as a duet, or duette, of Sun and Moon.’

Ayo Akingbade is an artist, writer and director who lives and works in London. Akingbade works predominantly with moving image, addressing notions of power, urbanism and stance.
