My Old School (15)

Dir: Jono McLeod | UK / USA | 2022 | 104 mins
Documentary with Alan Cumming, Dawn Steele, Clare Grogan

Jono McLeod’s wildly entertaining docudrama tells the outrageous story of Scotland’s Great Pretender, Brandon Lee. 1993: Brandon enrols at Bearsden Academy. He’s more worldly wise than the other teenagers, and perhaps more in need of a shave. Becoming one of the cool kids, he’s a bright student on the path to a very promising future. But that’s before people start to discover he’s not quite who they thought.

Returning to his old school, McLeod has captured the memories of fellow pupils who recall their time with Brandon and his impact on their lives, in a film that becomes a glorious voyage of discovery through class 5C, bolstered by a truly joyous performance from Alan Cumming, superb animation, a quality voice cast and a Lulu-led soundtrack.
