Olivia Colman, Toby Jones and Colin First star in Oscar-winning director Sam Mendes’ (American Beauty, Revolutionary Road, 1917) gorgeous, achingly poignant new film about the power of art and human connection.

Margate, 1981: Hilary (Colman) works at the seafront’s Empire cinema during a time of recession, mass unemployment and widespread racism. Her colleagues – pompous, grumpy manager Mr Ellis (Colin Firth), dedicated projectionist Norman (Toby Jones) and assistants Neil (Tom Brooke) and Janine (Hannah Onslow) – are a family of sorts. But Hilary is sliding into unhappiness as the Empire is sliding into economic ruin and disrepair; until the cinema hires a new ticket-seller, Stephen (Micheal Ward), a young Black man with whom she forms an instant connection. Sweet, heartfelt and humane, beautifully photographed by Roger Deakins, Empire of Light takes an emotive yet clear-eyed look at Britain’s recent past.
