The Mummy star Brendan Fraser makes a triumphant return to the screen with an extraordinary, award-winning performance in Darren Aronofsky’s (Requiem for a Dream, The Wrestler, Black Swan) high-profile new drama The Whale.

Based on the acclaimed play by Samuel D. Hunter, it follows reclusive former literature professor Charlie (Fraser). Chronically obese and addicted to food, Charlie spends his days on the sofa, seemingly eating himself towards his demise. But despite numerous regrets and the physical indignities of his life, he’s still able to connect with people – his nurse, Liz (Hong Chau), young missionary Thomas (Ty Simpkins), and potentially, he hopes, his estranged daughter (Sadie Sink) – and make out the good in the world. With a complex and really magnetic turn from Fraser – a sweet and intelligent actor who seems constitutionally incapable of cynicism – The Whale tells a heart-wrenching story of grief, grace and redemption.
