Morocco (U)

Director: Josef Von Sternberg | USA | 1930 | 88 mins
Cast | Gary Cooper, Marlene Dietrich, Adolphe Menjou

“The story of a fierce, tempestuous, all-consuming love…” Marlene Dietrich stars in Josef von Sternberg’s (The Blue Angel, Shanghai Express) gorgeous pre-Code romance, a fluent display of the visual vocabulary of love and a study of Dietrich’s ability to both convey the ‘feminine mystique’ and slip easily between modes of female and male gender performance.

World-weary chanteuse Amy Jolly (Dietrich) arrives in Morocco on the same ship as wealthy playboy La Bessiere (Adolphe Menjou). Finding work at a local club, she attracts the attention of womanising Legionnaire Tom Brown (Gary Cooper), but discouraged by Amy's melancholy demeanour, he departs for another rendezvous. When Amy follows, she’s attacked by locals and Tom defends her – an act that has consequences for him, Amy and the romantic hopes of La Bessiere…
