All Quiet on the Western Front (15)

Dir: Edward Berger | Germany, USA | 2022 | 147 mins
Cast | Felix Kammerer, Albrecht Schuch, Daniel Brühl

Edward Berger’s stunning, eloquent and impassioned adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque’s classic anti-war novel swept the board at the BAFTAs and looks set to do the same at the upcoming Academy Awards, where it’s nominated for nine awards including Best Picture.

The first German-language adaptation of the book, it tells the story of a young German soldier arriving on the Western Front during World War I. Paul (Felix Kammerer) and his comrades experience first-hand how the initial euphoria of war curdles into desperation, chaos and pure fear as they fight for their lives in the trenches.

Vivid and poignant, All Quiet on the Western Front is an urgent, intelligent and viscerally intense reminder of the nightmarish futility of war.
