A timeless classic and an international audience favourite, Local Hero – Bill Forsyth’s indelibly touching ode to rural Scottish life – returns to screens this year for its 40th anniversary. Texan oil executive Mac (Peter Riegert) is dispatched by his eccentric boss Felix Happer (Burt Lancaster) to Ferness, a remote village on Scotland’s west coast, with orders to buy out the community for the development of a refinery. But once there, he finds cheerful future millionaires, fantastical Northern Lights, a stubborn beachcomber, and a mermaid with webbed toes. Enchanted by Ferness and its distinctive citizens, Texas and his mission begin to seem further and further away… Endlessly quotable and poignant, Local Hero is a disarming, wry and understated study of character and place with a prescient environmental message.
