Frida (12a)

Dir: Carla Gutierrez | Mexico, USA | 2024 | 87 mins | Subtitled

This is a Spanish language film and will be subtitled.

A raw, intimate and magical journey through the life, mind, and heart of iconic Mexican artist Frida Kahlo. Told through her own words for the very first time – drawn from her diary, letters, essays, and interviews – Frida explores her world with vivid, lyrical animation inspired by her magnificent artworks..

A remarkable, complex person, equally absorbed by art and revolution, one of the great tragedies of Kahlo’s life was that despite her brilliance, she was often defined by the men whose orbits she shared. But Carla Gutiérrez keeps the focus on Kahlo herself in this astonishing, deeply moving directorial debut, inviting us to get to know one of the greatest artists of the 20th century on her own terms, via an extraordinary array of archival imagery and footage, music, and personal journal entries joyfully brought to life.

“A portrait of Frida Kahlo that’s a triumph of deep-dive research and dynamic artistry” The Hollywood Reporter
