The Zone of Interest (12a)

Dir: Jonathan Glazer | USA, UK, Poland | 2023 | 105 mins
Cast | Sandra Hüller, Christian Friedel, Ralph Herforth, Freya Kreutzkam

This is a German language film and will be subtitled.

Under the Skin, Sexy Beast and Birth director Jonathan Glazer returns with this dizzyingly sober study of the banality of evil, nominated for Best Picture, Best Directing and Best International Feature Film at the upcoming Oscars.

Based on the 2014 Martin Amis novel, it sees Rudolf (Christian Friedel) and his wife Hedwig (Sandra Hüller) living a bucolic middle-class family life in Poland. But he is Nazi commandant Rudolf Höss, and their enviable home is right next to Auschwitz concentration camp, where thousands are being brutally murdered each day – an unspeakable suffering which the Höss family largely calmly ignores, and which remains chillingly out of view.

Enhanced by painstaking framing and sound design, The Zone of Interest forces us to inhabit the Hösses’ world and interrogate the human capacity for compartmentalisation and complicity in horrific crimes.

“A masterpiece: a great film, and a great work of art” ★★★★★ BBC Film
